This is a 4-session live online course designed for sound practitioners, musicians, facilitators, and holistic wellness professionals seeking to deepen their relationship with rhythm—not just as a technical skill, but as an embodied and therapeutic tool.

Whether you’re just starting out or expanding your practice, this course offers a space to explore percussion instruments, intuitive rhythm, group facilitation techniques, and somatic approaches to rhythm-based sound healing. Each 1.5-hour weekly session offers hands-on experiences, rhythmic explorations, and practical insights.

Course Structure

Session 1: Body as a Percussion Instrument

Exploring rhythm through the body and understanding its applications in fun, healing, and group facilitation.

Session Goals:

  • Learn the fundamentals of body percussion and develop personal rhythmic skills.
  • Experience rhythm as a natural, embodied practice.
  • Explore games and activities that build rhythmic awareness and connection.
  • Understand how to apply body percussion in therapeutic or group settings such as drum circles or retreats.

Key Concepts & Activities:

  • Overview of body percussion sounds including clapping, tapping, stomping, and vocal rhythms as accessible rhythmic tools.
  • Practice basic body percussion sounds to develop coordination and timing.
  • Engage in call-and-response games and simple rhythm patterns to build confidence and group cohesion.
  • Discuss how body percussion supports grounding, connection, and embodied awareness in healing and facilitation.
  • Encourage playful exploration and spontaneous rhythm creation within the group.
  • Use vocal sounds and self-directed movement to maintain engagement without physical group presence.

Session 2: The Art & Science of Rhythm & Exploring the Djembe Drum

Understanding rhythm’s impact on emotional and mental states and developing foundational djembe skills.

Session Goals:

  • Develop an embodied understanding of pulse, rhythm, and groove.
  • Learn how rhythmic entrainment influences brain and body states.
  • Acquire fundamental djembe techniques and rhythmic patterns.
  • Explore integration of rhythmic breathwork and mantra into sound healing practice.

Key Concepts & Activities:

  • Overview of the djembe’s construction, sound qualities, and cultural significance in healing traditions.
  • Master core strokes (bass, tone, slap) focusing on hand positioning and sound clarity.
  • Practice 4/4 and 6/8 time signatures, simple grooves, and polyrhythms.
  • Explore how rhythm affects Delta, Theta, Alpha, and Beta brainwave states with listening and playing exercises.
  • Combine drum rhythms with breath cycles and chanting to support therapeutic outcomes.
  • Engage in interactive rhythmic exchanges to develop listening and presence.
  • Encourage use of body percussion and vocal rhythms for participants without instruments.

Session 3: Konnakol – The Art of Vocal Rhythm

Mastering rhythm through the vocal language of Konnakol for deepening rhythmic understanding and group facilitation.

Session Goals:

  • Learn fundamental Konnakol syllables and rhythmic vocabulary.
  • Internalize complex rhythmic patterns through vocalization.
  • Apply Konnakol rhythms to body percussion and instrumental practice.
  • Develop confidence in improvisation and leading rhythmic activities.

Key Concepts & Activities:

  • Introduction to Konnakol as a vocal percussion system from Indian classical music.
  • Practice core syllables such as Ta Ka Dhi Mi and Tha Ki Ta to form rhythmic phrases.
  • Build complex rhythms and variations using Konnakol syllables.
  • Link vocal rhythms with body percussion and instruments to embody rhythm fully.
  • Explore rhythmic creativity and leadership through vocal call-and-response.
  • Discuss how vocal rhythm supports mental focus, group cohesion, and trance states.
  • Use visual and audio examples for clear demonstration; encourage participants to practice aloud.

Session 4: Handpans & Rhythm in Sound Healing

Exploring handpan, djembe, and additional percussion instruments for melodic and rhythmic sound healing.

Session Goals:

  • Understand the complementary roles of handpan (melodic flow) and djembe (percussive grounding) in healing contexts.
  • Learn basic playing techniques and rhythmic patterns for handpan and djembe.
  • Develop skills in combining melody and rhythm to induce altered states.
  • Explore use of auxiliary percussion for texture, cleansing, and energy shifts.

Key Concepts & Activities:

  • Overview of handpan’s melodic layout and djembe’s rhythmic drive in therapeutic sound work.
  • Practice handpan tone production with soft taps and melodic loops; master djembe strokes and basic grooves.
  • Layer steady djembe pulses with handpan melodies and add percussive accents.
  • Encourage intuitive rhythmic and melodic play over a steady pulse to develop flow and responsiveness.
  • Introduce shakers, rattles, bells, and small percussion instruments for energetic cleansing and dynamic layering.
  • Match tempo and rhythm to brainwave states for relaxation, meditation, and activation.
  • Suggest body percussion mimicry and tapping exercises for participants without instruments.

About the Teachers

Arjun Arora

Driven by his endless curiosity for a better understanding of the Self, Arjun has been on journeys across India and the world, learning from philosophies, meditation, yoga, psychology, music and various holistic wellness modalities. Arjun founded Sarveda as an earnest attempt to align his passion for creativity and well-being with making a positive impact and changing the world for the better.

He is a percussionist, guitarist, sound producer and a sound therapist with a keen interest to use music as a force to help people connect with themselves and others. His other interests lie in integrating the broad vision of the philosophies of the East with the pragmatic psychology of the West.  Arjun is an engineering graduate from IIT Madras.

Alex & Vlada

We are Alex and Vlada, also known as Rhythmic Couple – musicians, teachers, and facilitators dedicated to spreading rhythm, joy, and human connection through body percussion, drumming, and interactive performance.

Alex is a professional percussionist, multi-instrumentalist, and rhythm educator with over 10,000 online students and two decades of experience. He plays frame drums, darbuka, cajon, flutes, didgeridoo, and specializes in konnakol and body percussion.Alex has traveled to Brazil, Spain, Turkey, India, Peru, Germany, Greece, France, and other countries to study his craft and to teach at various festivals, including the Body Rhythm Festival, the International Body Music Festival, Drums of the World, and more.

Vlada is a rhythm artist with a background in organizing ecstatic dance festivals. She now performs and co-leads workshops and drum circles alongside Alex, bringing her energy and sensitivity through body percussion, asalato, frame drums, and electronic drums.

Together, we lead workshops, drum circles, and performances that are highly interactive, playful, and deeply connecting. Our sessions combine rhythmic development with a warm, creative atmosphere that helps people relax, express themselves, and rediscover joy through rhythm.
